  1. VACCINES have brought us closer, and will bring us closer again! 2 “Vaccines are one of our most important tools for preventing outbreaks and keeping the world safe. While most children today are being vaccinated, far too many left behind. Unacceptably, it’s often those who are most at risk- the poorest, the most marginalized, those touched by conflict or forced from their homes — who are persistently missed. — Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General World Health Organisation

  3. INTRODUCTION 4 Every year, 10th November is celebrated as World Immunization Day. It is observed with the aim of highlighting vaccination as a low-tech, cost effective, high impact solution to preventing illness and disease in individuals of all ages. This day is celebrated to make people aware about the importance of getting timely vaccinations against vaccine preventable diseases. Immunization is the process whereby a person is made immune or resistant to an infectious disease, typically by the administration of a vaccine.Vaccinations prevent susceptibility to illnesses which can result in serious complications and even death. 1.
  4. FACTS According to the WHO, immunization prevents between 2 and 3 million deaths every year and now protects children not only against diseases for which vaccines have been available for many years, such as Diphtheria, Tetanus, Polio and Measles, but also against diseases such as Pneumonia and Rotavirus Diarrhoea, two of the biggest killers of children under age of five. Yet, there are still nearly 20 million unvaccinated and under-vaccinated children in the world today. Some diseases that once killed thousands of children, have been eliminated completely. Polio is a prime example of the great impact that vaccines have had in India. Polio was once India’s most-feared disease, causing death and paralysis across the country, but today, thanks to vaccination, as of 2014, India has been declared polio-free by theWHO, and has been removed from the list of endemic countries. 5
  5. CHALLENGES TO IMMUNIZATION • Some of the challenges to immunization include limited capacities of staff, particularly in poor-performing states and at the field level, and gaps in key areas such as predicting demand, logistics and cold chain management, which result in high wastage rates. • India also still lacks a robust system to track vaccine-preventable diseases. Vaccination coverage varies considerably from state to state, with the lowest rates in India’s large central states. Differences in uptake are geographical, regional, rural-urban, poor-rich and gender-related. • On average, girls receive fewer immunizations than boys and higher birth order infants have lower vaccination coverage. 6
  6. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? 7 Each year, over 1.5 million children die from diseases that are preventable with readily available vaccines. These diseases include measles, meningitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), yellow fever, polio and hepatitis B. New vaccines against other illnesses, such as pneumonia and diarrhea caused by rotavirus, have been developed and are now more widely used. Children who are immunized are protected from these dangerous diseases, which can often lead to disability or death. All children have the right to this protection. Every girl and boy needs to be fully immunized. Early protection is critical. The immunizations in the child’s first year and into the second year are especially important. It is also essential that pregnant women are immunized against tetanus to protect themselves as well as their newborns. Although there has been progress in the past years in immunizing children, in 2015 nearly 19.4 million children are still missing out on basic vaccines. Parents or other caregivers need to know why immunization is important, the recommended immunization schedule, and where their children can be immunized. Parents or other caregivers need to know that it is safe to immunize a child who has a minor illness or a disability or is suffering from malnutrition.

  10. Points to remember: 12 While taking vaccination •Ensure that one needle; one syringe is used only one time. •Make sure that both needle and syringe must be discarded once they have been used. It is very unsafe to change the needle and reuse the syringe as this practice can transmit disease. •Follow the immunization schedule as per the guidelines. Keep a track of your immunization record and carry it along before getting any subsequent vaccination done. •Always consult your doctor before getting any type of vaccination done.
  11. Frequently Asked Questions 13
  12. 14 My kid is healthy, active and eats well. Is it necessary to go for immunized? The antibodies received from mother do not last long, leaving the infant vulnerable to disease. Moreover, immunization gives extra protection against deadly diseases. If the babies get antibodies from mother, why is it important to give immunization? A child can be immunized in a nearby government health centre. Vaccinations are also provided by the private hospitals and private doctors. Vaccination provides a shield against the disease before it develops. If you wait to get vaccinated after the disease, it might get too late. Prevention is better than cure. How and where can a child be immunized?
